Drawing on History: The National Drawing Invitational: A Retrospective Exhibition

The Arkansas Arts Center presents an exhibition featuring drawings acquired from the works of artists featured in past National Drawing Invitational exhibitions. Since its inception in 1986, the National Drawing Invitational has contributed to the rise of drawing as a major medium in contemporary art by stimulating the making and collecting of American drawing.

Seeing the Essence:

Photographs by William E. Davis

January 24, 2017 - April 16, 2017

The exhibition Seeing the Essence: Photographs by William E. Davis celebrates this great Arkansas photographer’s generous bequest of more than 700 of his original photographic prints to the Arkansas Arts Center. The exhibition features twenty-five large black and white photographic prints made by Davis, revealing his special gifts for choosing distinctive subjects and looking at them as no one else would.

The Creativity Phenomenon: Acrylic Paintings by Deborah Poe

April 11, 2016 - July 2, 2017

Museum School instructor and Youth Department Chair Deborah Poe shares her joy in creativity with visitors to the Arts Center in an exhibition of her paintings. Addition to her art works, the exhibition features some of the varied materials she teaches students to use so they can add dimension to their acrylic paintings.

Throughout the year the Arkansas Arts Center displays works from its own collection. The galleries described below are filled with objects selected dating from over 600 years of Western art right up to the current day. The Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection specializes in drawings and contemporary craft, but there are also examples of paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, and decorative arts, among other media.

The scintillating watercolors and drawings of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French artist Paul Signac are the focus of two intimate galleries at the Arkansas Arts Center that have recently been redesigned and reinstalled. These works come from America’s finest collection of Signac’s graphic art, one hundred and thirty-three works that were assembled by Arkansan industrialist James T. Dyke. Mr. Dyke presented this magnificent collection to the Arkansas Arts Center in 1999.
