Organized by the Arkansas Arts Center

Museum School instructor and Youth Department Chair Deborah Poe shares her joy in creativity with visitors to the Arts Center in an exhibition of her paintings. Addition to her art works, the exhibition features some of the varied materials she teaches students to use so they can add dimension to their acrylic paintings. The artist says:

Deborah Poe
The question of how to access your creativity has been around for centuries. I became interested in this phenomenon when I was studying for my Masters Degree in Gifted Education. Gifted individuals from all walks of life, from scientists to artists, use their creative abilities. I am interested in how, as an artist, you can tap into these creative impulses while creating art. I love that feeling of total immersion in the creative zone!

Allowing myself to have free-spirited fun is essential to tapping into my creative spirit. Sometimes that means listing to music, painting in a playful atmosphere with friends and laughter, or trying new materials or colors. Surrounding myself with positive, creative people helps me to be creative. I try to express my creative spirit in each of my works. I hope the creative spirit and joy of these pieces speak to you as they have to me.

For 34 years, I enjoyed being a public-school teacher specializing in Gifted Education. I also taught for six years in a Juvenile Program for at-risk youth. I have taught at the Arkansas Arts Center for over twenty years. I am currently the Chair of the Youth Programs for the Museum School, in addition to teaching Experimental Acrylics classes for adults. Laughter and fun are definitely a part of this class!

My children grew up taking classes at the Arkansas Arts Center, creating the art that fills my home. My daughter, Miranda Young, is a Scenic Designer and Prop Master for the Children’s Theater at the AAC in addition to teaching printmaking at the Museum School. Now my granddaughter enjoys classes at the Arts Center. We anticipate being a part of the AAC for many years to come. The Arkansas Arts Center has been a part of our family always!
