ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME

Specifically designed for Educators, this class will cover the basics of operating and maintaining an Electric Kiln. Topics will include evaluating existing kilns and kiln furniture, pros and cons of different types of kilns, planning for future kiln purchases, loading, firing, and basic troubleshooting.

Explore the soda firing process in our soda kiln. Learn about soda glazes, slips, and wadding. Bring 2-3 small, leather hard pots for applying flashing slips and 2-3 small bisque pots to glaze. Examine glazes and compare results during the second session.

Explore basic pinch, slab, and coil construction methods, as well as the use of molds. Decorative treatments will include stamps, slips, and stains. Learn how to glaze and finish pots using high-fire glazing techniques. Important to attend first class.

Only clay purchased at the Arkansas Arts Center is allowed for use in ceramics classes. During the first session, students will purchase a 25 lb. bag of clay from their instructor. Cost is $30 and covers all glazing and firing fees.

Explore concepts of content, narrative, pattern, and abstract design on handbuilt earthenware forms. Learn about color theory and how to apply decorative elements to handbuilt and sculptural forms. Use slip, underglazes, and low fire techniques while developing a personal voice in your work. Materials fee of $20 payable to instructor at first class.

Need an intro to the wheel or just some help refining your existing skills? Sign up for a throwing class! Learn to throw a cylinder, mug, bowl, vase, and various other functional pots. Discover how to finish pots, using standard decorating and glazing techniques. High-fire, low-fire, and Raku available.

Focus on basic skills of wedging, centering, opening, pulling, and trimming a pot. Learn to throw a cylinder, mug, bowl, vase, and flower pot. Discover how to finish pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. Bring towel to each class. This class is an introduction to the potter's wheel for beginning students only.

Take your throwing skills to the next level. Continue developing basic skills such as trimming and pulling handles, as well as throw more complicated forms such as serving bowls, lidded vessels, platters, and altered forms. Work at your own skill level and progress at your own rate. For experienced students who have mastered basic centering and pulling techniques.

Classes will present a broader discussion of sculptural forms beyond the figure and how best to incorporate narrative elements. Learn to form, texture, and finish work to bring your ideas to life.
